The market is flooded with different sizes and brands of generators, which can make the shopping process a bit daunting. If you’re dry camping – i.e. not hooked up to shore power – you will definitely need some way to power your RV’s appliances.

Today, we’ve got three fool-proof tips for buying a generator.

1. Choose a generator sufficient for your needs. Generators come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to choose one that’s powerful enough for your RV’s appliances. The most common generators range from 2,000 to 3,000 watts. For any appliances that heat up (i.e., space heaters, toasters, coffee makers or microwaves), you’ll need at least a 2,000 watt generator. For larger appliances like air conditioners, we recommend a 3,000 watt generator.
2. Invested in trusted brand names. We always recommend choosing products from a well-established brand. You may be able to find a similar size generator for less money at an offshore company, but keep in mind that even the best generator may need some work done, and lesser-known brands can be very difficult when it comes to warranty work – especially if the smaller company goes out of business, leaving you with no way to get replacement parts.
